We’re delighted to announce the launch of our first iPad app – ‘Contemporary: Art Gallery of New South Wales‘ – produced and designed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in association with The Nest. And we’re equally delighted that the app was featured on the iTunes App Store as ‘iPad App Of The Week‘ on its launch.
The ‘Contemporary: Art Gallery of New South Wales‘ iPad app will enable people to get up close to 29 works by 24 of the most important Australian and international contemporary artists of our time, including Shaun Gladwell, Simryn Gill, Rosemary Laing, Mike Parr, Jeff Koons, Christo, Ugo Rondinone and Sol LeWitt among others.
Designed and developed with ‘ease of use’ foremost in the mind, the app allows users to zoom into images to see fine details, discover stories of the artists and the art, go behind the scenes with videos, listen to interviews with leading artists and Gallery curators, and read simple explanations of art terms – including movements such as conceptual art and minimalism. New content will be fed into the app on an ongoing basis, allowing the user to refresh their experience using an in-app prompt, without the need to trigger a full update through the App Store.
The artworks featured in this initial release of the Contemporary app were selected from the new contemporary galleries at the Art Gallery of NSW. Visitors to the new contemporary galleries are also able to explore the app on iPads at the Gallery in the UBS ArtZone.
‘Contemporary: Art Gallery of New South Wales‘ is the first in a planned suite of apps for iPads which will highlight the Gallery’s collection areas. The next will focus on the 20th-century Australian collection and then be followed by one on the Asian collection; both will highlight approximately 30 key works.
The app is now available for free download from the App Store and is compatible with both iPad 2 and iPad. Download at thene.st/agnsw-ipad.
