The Nest is delighted to announce the arrival of its latest iPhone app, artwhatson.
Produced for our client 10 group, the artwhatson app is a unique iPhone companion to the artwhatson web site – one of Australia’s most comprehensive visual arts guides. Augmenting a digital portfolio that includes a renowned website, weekly e-news, and Facebook & Twitter activity, the artwhatson app now takes all of the content available at Australia’s online art space and puts it into your pocket.
Produced & designed by The Nest, the iPhone app lists hundreds of exhibitions all around the country, sorted by gallery, location or date, and is constantly updated via an API link to the artwhatson database. A ‘Near Me’ feature allows you to find current exhibitions and local galleries in your area, and the ‘Favourites’ function gives you the option to bookmark selected galleries and check for updates exclusively from those venues. One of our favourite features is the option to Browse by ‘Openings’ – listing opening events in the coming days. And if you can’t work out what to choose, artwhatson’s editorial team also lists a Recommended group of ‘not to miss’ exhibitions around Australia.
Best of all, the iPhone app is free to download from the iTunes store, courtesy of artwhatson.
Artists and galleries that are interested in being listed with artwhatson can sign up for a free 45-day trial – as full members of the site, listings info will be carried on artwhatson.com.au, listed in their weekly e-news and featured in the iPhone app. artwhatson offers special support for Artist Run Initiatives, Public and Regional Galleries, and other non-profit arts bodies.
Reviews for the artwhatson app from Apple App Store customers:
“I love going to openings and exhibitions – this app constantly updates the latest . You can view current and upcoming shows all around oz or tailor it to your state. The ‘closing’ section makes sure you never miss out . The galleries are linked to a map and direct you from your current location, and the app even pinpoints which galleries are in your area. You can also keep track of all your favourites. Great design/colours and the pics are big. Love it!” ArtyHearty
“My new best friend! artwhatson has so many features, I can find galleries and new artists at the push of a button. Amazing!” Catherine Benton
Comments on the artwhatson app from Twitter:

Greetings
Really enjoying your ArtWhatsOn app. Can you tell me if this also OK for my iPad as I’m finding images distorted – eg: the National Gallery of Victoria’s image of the East portal entrance – it’s all squashed!

Very cool, and now an app for the writers festival, any hope that either will be developed for non iPhone smartphones using Android. Please?

@ ‘Artsview’ – your app looks like a good guide for Melbourne & Sydney Galleries, check out ‘artwhatson’ for national coverage. If anyone else has seen any other good visual art apps, we’re keen to hear about them!
@ Spike, hopefully before too long – we’re certainly keen to deliver apps cross platform, and open things up to a broader user group.

@ David – thanks for the feedback. I had a look and it’s in the source image (i.e. the one supplied through the feed) rather than being squished in the app! Glad you’re enjoying the app.
